Activity Booth

Make a simple “robotic” arm as a way of considering how robots interact with the environment around them.

Brought to you by the Blazer Bots, Woodlawn School Team 895. Blazer Bots is the student-led, teacher-mentored robotics team at Woodlawn School that participates in the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics (KIPR) – https://www.kipr.org/ – Botball program.

“Botball is a team-oriented robotics competition based on national education standards. By designing, building, programming, and documenting robots, students use science, technology, engineering, math, and writing skills in a hands-on project that reinforces their learning.” –KIPR.org.

The theme this year is Moonbase Mission. Based on the released game board, students create a strategy and then build and code two different robots to complete tasks and accumulate points during a 2 minute run time. Students also participate in three phases of documentation throughout the building season and then prepare an 8 minute presentation at the regional competition which reflects on the entire process.

Woodlawn School will be competing, for the first time, in the Greater DC Area Regionals in April. Come talk with the team as they explain the game board, showcase their robots, and talk about their strategy, their struggles, and their triumphs as they prepare for competition.
