Animal Adaptations

This is my skin — which I used to be in!

Join C.C. King of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission as she shares skins from common NC mammals and facilitates student exploration of their unique physical and behavioral adaptations. Specifically targeted to 4th grade curriculum, and adaptable to many ages.

This live stream originally aired on February 10th, 2021 at 4PM. You can still enjoy the video at the link below.

When we asked C.C. King for a description of her presentation, she sent a poem which says it all:

This is my skin —

which I used to be in!

I left it behind

to teach about my kind.

What can you see

that it tells about me?

Come guess your best;

we’ll fill in rest.

North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is the state government agency created by the General Assembly in 1947 to conserve and sustain the state’s fish and wildlife resources through research, scientific management, wise use and public input. The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws.

The ncwildlife.org has some great resources for learning about wildlife in North Caroline. For example here’s a directory of different animal species:

https://www.ncwildlife.org/Learning/Species

This is a great tool for identifying the different animals that you might encounter around the state.

Journal Questions
  1. What were some of the animals shown in the presentation?
  2. Have you seen any of the animals mentioned in your yard, neighborhood or local park?
  3. Can you describe an adaptation that was discussed in the presentation?

Earn badges and qualify for prize drawing by registering and answering journal questions. It's fun and easy!
