Homemade Music

Make your own instrument from home!

Music is all around us, and it is so easy to find ways to make your own! With a few simple household objects, such as cereal boxes, paper towel rolls, tape, glue, and rubber bands, you can make so many different instruments from a maraca to a guitar. These few videos will show you exactly what you will need and step by step instructions for how to make your very own instrument. Don’t forget to create a song to play with it!

This activity was created exclusively for STEAMfest by Taylor Martin, Woodlawn Performing Arts Teacher.  Here’s a picture of the rain stick that Ms Martin made.

Here’s the steps …

  1. Watch the intro video from Ms Martin above.
  2. Choose an instrument from below.
  3. Watch the video for your instrument.
  4. Now the fun part … make your own instrument. Don’t forget to decorate it!
  5. Make music by yourself or with friends!
  6. Share in your journal.
Journal Questions
  1. What instrument did you make?
  2. How do you play your instrument?
  3. Where does the sound come from on your instrument?
  4. Can you think of any other instruments that you could make from items around your home?

Earn badges and qualify for prize drawing by registering and answering journal questions. It's fun and easy!
