Pizza box Instructions:
- Using a ruler and marker, trace three sides of a square, making each line 10 inches long.
- Using a box cutter or scissors cut a flap in the lid by cutting along the three traced lines, leaving about an inch between the sides of the flap and the edges of the lid.
- Fold the flap, creating a crease between the back of the lid and the cut out square.
- Cover the inside of the flap with aluminum foil. Add tape to the back of the flap to secure the foil.
- Cover the opening you made in the lid with plastic wrap on both the front and back sides, almost like creating a widow. Secure both sides of plastic wrap with tape to create an airtight seal.
- Line the bottom of your pizza box with aluminum foil, covering the entire bottom and the interior sides.
- Lay black construction paper over the aluminum foil.
- Roll up four pieces of newspaper, individually, to create four rolls placed along the inside of the pizza box. This is to create insulation.
- Close the box. Place the wooden skewer on the top of the pizza box and use it to prop up the foiled flap, allowing the foil to be exposed to sunlight.
- Preheat the solar oven for 1 hour by placing it in direct sunlight
- Add in food items or art materials like crayons inside the box and allow to cook/melt.
Pringle’s can Instructions:
- Using a ruler and a marker, trace four sides of a rectangle near the center of the can, making each line about 2-3 inches long.
- Using a box cutter or scissors cut a flap in the can by cutting along the traced lines. Remove the cut out rectangle.
- Use plastic wrap to cover the outside of the rectangular hole, securing with tape if needed, to create an airtight seal.
- Use the wooden skewer to create a hole in the center of the Pringle’s lid, push the skewer through the can to create another whole on the opposite side of the can (the bottom). This wooden skewer can be used to hold a hotdog while it is cooking inside your oven.
- Preheat the solar oven for 1 hour by placing it in direct sunlight.
- Add in food items or art materials like crayons inside the box and allow to cook/melt.
- Why is aluminum foil an important material for your Solar Oven?
- Why is it important to create an airtight seal with the plastic wrap?
- Why is insulation important to help our food cook or melt?
- Why do you think a solar oven takes longer to cook food than a regular oven?

Project Scientist
Project Scientist began in 2011 with a dream to increase diversity in STEM by inspiring girls. Project Scientist has grown from serving 5 girls in the founder’s guesthouse to serving more than 2,000 girls on university campuses across the nation each year.
We created Project Scientist to change the world’s view of “who” a scientist is and “what” a scientist does. We aim to transform the face of STEM by nurturing today’s future scientists who will lead the world in solving tomorrow’s greatest challenges! Every second of a girl’s time with us is intentional and based off of the latest research of what drives and sustains girls’ interest in STEM. We are determined to reach STEM girls and hold their hand through their PhD or as far as their STEM dreams take them because we believe that the future of STEM is female.
