Water and Oil

In Science Mom’s Guide to Water, Part 5, join Science Mom to explore why oil and water don’t mix with four investigations: ocean in a bottle, lava lamp, oil lamp, and a grease fire explosion.

Water is so good at dissolving things, that it’s earned the label of “Universal Solvent.” But one thing water doesn’t dissolve is oil. In Science Mom’s Guide to Water, Part 5, we explore why oil and water don’t mix with four investigations: Ocean in a bottle, Lava lamp, Oil lamp, and a grease fire explosion.

Adult supervision is required. Please do not attempt to make a grease fire explosion at home.

Journal Questions
  1. Water is called the “Universal Solvent”.  Why is that term misleading?  From the video, what did we learn about that does not dissolve in water?
  2. What is hydrophobic?
  3. Did you make an ocean in a bottle or a lava lamp?  Please share your experience.

Earn badges and qualify for prize drawing by registering and answering journal questions. It's fun and easy!
