Build A Fruit Battery

Use lemons, limes, and tomatoes to build a real battery and light up an LED with fruit power.

Building a fruit-powered battery

At Build A Fruit Battery, guests explore how chemistry can create electricity by building a simple battery from everyday fruit. Using copper and zinc electrodes, they test whether a lemon, lime, tomato, or a combination of fruits can produce enough power to light an LED.

This hands-on activity invites guests to experiment, compare results, and discover that different materials can work together to make electrical energy. It is a fun, surprising way to connect science concepts like circuits, metals, and chemical reactions to objects they recognize from daily life.

STEAMteam

STEAMfest is made possible with the help of hundreds of organizations and volunteers, both within the Woodlawn School Community and without. The STEAMteam is responsible for the planning, promotion, organization, and execution of STEAMfest. Each year the STEAMteam creates a number of activity booths based on the teams skills and experience. Meet The STEAMteam
