Science Mom Demonstrates Water Cohesion

In Science Mom’s Guide to Water, Part 1 – Cohesion, Science Mom demonstrates cohesion with 3 activities: “The gravity-defying lid,” “The magic screen”, and “hot and cold water cups.”

Water is so abundant, we often take for granted how remarkable and unusual it is. Water is the only substance on our planet that can exist naturally in all three states of matter: as a solid, a liquid, and a gas. Water also has seven other incredible properties: cohesion, adhesion, surface tension, capillary action, high specific heat, universal solvent, expands when frozen. In our first video and guide, we use three fun investigations to explore cohesion—the ability of water molecules to stick to each other.

Assistance is need for one of these activities.

Journal Questions
  1. What is cohesion?
  2. In the video, Science Mom put hot water on top of cold water and cold water on top of hot water.  What happened?  Did what happened match your prediction?
  3. Why did the the yellow water stay on top of the blue water while the blue water mixed with the yellow water?

Earn badges and qualify for prize drawing by registering and answering journal questions. It's fun and easy!
