Woodlawn School’s STEAMfest has had a great 2 weeks and we still have 1 more week to go! In addition to serving up over 100 activities and live streams to students and families around the globe, we’ve been able to ship prizes to lucky winners in the United States. Here’s a recap and additional information we’ve acquired from our winners.
Our first winner, Daniel, from Cornelius, NC, won our Opening Weekend Prize. Daniel, a 6th grader at the Community School of Davidson, was randomly selected from our list of STEAMfest Explorer’s that completed the registration process and were among the first to claim their MySTEAMfest pages on Opening Weekend. Danial won a High-Powered Microscope with slides set, phone adapter, and accessories. Daniel’s mother had this to say when contacted by the STEAMteam:
“It is super cool that he won. Daniel has never won anything like this! He just said… are you sure they picked me? We are so excited and grateful! Thank-you thank-you! We heard about you guys through my daughter (19) who works at the planetarium, fly’s planes, and is a counselor for Space Camp in Huntsville AL. Yes my children love STEAM haha! He loves all things space and NASA, is a member of the boy scouts and takes coding/robotics classes. He is a curious sweet loving kind guy who is a great friend and has a passion for science. STEAMfest will give him opportunities to grow! We are thankful to everyone involved that make STEAMfest happen.”
Our first Daily Winner was Wyatt, of Fate, TX. Wyatt’s winning journal entry was entered on the Mooresville Public Library’s “Weather in a Jar activity” and Woodlawn School awarded him with a Weather Science Kit. Wyatt’s randomly selected journal entry included an uploaded picture of the water cycle and his mother had this to say when contacted regarding Wyatt’s winning:
“This is such wonderful and exciting news!!! Wyatt would love to share his art work with everyone on your website and social media. He had a lot of fun with the experiments and learning about the Cycle of Water. We still have the cloud/rain water experiment sitting on our kitchen island. It has been a ton of fun to share with our neighborhood friends. Thank you for creating this program and inviting everyone to participate. “
Here are some highlights from some of our other Daily Winners:
Screen name Little_Lamb of Las Vegas, NV was our next daily winner. Little_Lamb completed the “Newton’s Cradle” activity created for STEAMfest by a Woodlawn School Parent. Little_Lamb said a bouncy ball was a good example of something that demonstrates conservation of energy and momentum. We are awaiting more information from Little_Lamb.
Our next daily winner, haled from within the Woodlawn School Family. Matthew, of Concord, NC, is an 8th grader and his winning journal entry came from the “Rubber Egg Experiment” activity. The video for the activity came from Science Beyond’s YouTube Channel. Woodlawn sent Matthew an Organic Chemistry Model Kit.
The Rubber Egg Activity with curated video from Science Beyond must be a popular activity. In addition to Matthew’s completed journal entry, 3 more journal entries were randomly drawn after they completed this activity. Abby of Huntsville, AL is in the 4th grade and Woodlawn sent her a Hydroponics Kit with Gardening Diary by Educational Insights Nancy B’s Science Club. We are awaiting confirmation from screen name Bliss C of Bliss, CA and Snowball hamster of Cumberland Center, ME on their wins.
Woodlawn sent Kara, of Nitro, WV, a 4M Bubble Science Physics & Chemistry Lab set for her daily prize win. Kara, a 1st grader, watched the Live Stream of “Sunny the Bearded Dragon“, presented by a Woodlawn School Family, and answered the journal questions to complete the activity. Kara wrote in her journal:
“I think Sunny is very cute. I wish I could have a bearded dragon as a pet, but I cannot. Sunny is omnivorous so he eats plants and meat. We saw Sunny eat dried crickets. They also told us Sunny eats lettuce and berries. He has a light sensing spot (I forgot the scientific name) on top of his head. It helps him know if their is a bird or other predat0r above him.”
Kara’s mother added:
“Kara will be so excited! She really likes to get mail, please address the prize to her. She really enjoyed the experience yesterday (with Sunny) and is looking forward to completing more activities. Thank you so much for the STEAMfest experience!”
Daniel, of Huntersville, NC, a 2nd grader at Woodlawn, completed the activity “How To Cook An Egg“, which was filled with chemistry, physics, and biology references. Daniel asked the question was the presenter of the live stream a Woodlawn School teacher? To answer the question, yes, the live stream was presented by Woodlawn School’s beloved science teacher Christian Eggleston. He teaches Middle and Upper School students at Woodlawn. Some folks in attendance last year at Woodlawn School’s STEAMfest 2020 in person event, might remember “Mr. Egg” standing on a ladder dropping eggs. He hosted the “Egg Drop Challenge” last year and that’s Woodlawn science teacher Ms. Carlisle in the video assembled by 8th grade Woodlawn student Sajan Patel for STEAMfest 2021’s virtual event.
Our next daily winner is also a STEAMfest Creator. Phillipe, a Woodlawn School 2nd grader, created the activity “Make A Penny Battery” and his winning journal entry was associated with the activity “Square Root Trick” accredited to tecmath. When answering the question “Are you going to use this technique on your next math test?”, Phillipe answered, “Maybe if we did this in 2nd grade!” When he learned he was a winner, Phillipe had this to say, “I had my eye on the many cool prizes, can’t believe I get one!! And I love square roots!”
Our latest daily winner is Jesse, of Madison, AL. Jesse, a 3rd grader, submitted his winning journal entry after completing the “Fizzy Drink” activity by creator MEL Science. Here’s a video of Jesse doing the experiment with his dad (click to play):
Not sure MEL Science expected Jesse’s reaction in tasting the fizzy drink, but Jesse was excited to win and had this to say:
“I won a STEAMfest prize! I’m super happy!”
Here’s some information on our Weekly Winners:
We have had 2 Weekly Winners thus far! Our first Weekly Winner was Ethan, a 4th Grader at Pine Lake Preparatory in NC. Ethan won the 70mm telescope with carrying bag, tripod, phone attachment, and more prize on the “Rube Goldberg Machines” activity created by Woodlawn School 8th graders Saiya and Sajan Patel. Ethan said his own Rube Goldberg Machine “put a bottle in the recycling bin” and he used “domino’s, cereal boxes, cups, balls and card board”. When notified of his win, Ethan had this to say,
“Oh my goodness…that’s so exciting…thank you!!”
Today, February 14th, 2021, we are pleased to announce this weeks Weekly Winner, screen name Tiger10, of Cornelius, NC. Tiger10’s randomly selected journal entry was also from MEL Science’s “Fizzy Drink” activity. Hope her drink tasted better compared to Jesse’s. Tiger10 won the STEAM Bundle which includes a STEAM activity kit, Snap Circuits Set, STEAM book full of fun STEAM activities to try at home, and a hand help microscope!
